Moments ago Emberfin posted a new announcement that confirms what we gathered from the recent FAQ change, meaning from the 5th anniversary of WoW, you can only login to WoW with a merged Battle.net account. For most people that means your WoW login name will change to your email address. Read more below:

Blizzard PosterEmberfin on 12/10 World of Warcraft Battle.net Conversion (Source)

A few months ago, we unveiled the Battle.net account, our new way for players to log in to World of Warcraft and future Blizzard games, sign up for upcoming beta tests, shop the online Blizzard Store, and more with just one username and password. This was just the first step in the rollout of the brand-new Battle.net; in the future, players will be able to use Battle.net to participate in cross-realm chat in World of Warcraft, create real-life friends lists, communicate across different games, and a whole lot more.

In preparation for the launch of these new features, on November 12, 2009, all current World of Warcraft players will be required to merge their World of Warcraft accounts with a Battle.net account in order to log in to the game. As our way to say 'thanks' for taking a moment to go through the process, existing World of Warcraft accounts that upgrade to Battle.net (including those that have already switched over) will receive a brand-new penguin in-game pet -- check for him in your in-game mailbox later this week. Starting on November 12, all World of Warcraft players will need to log in to the game using a Battle.net username and password, and anyone who wishes to create a new World of Warcraft account will need to start with a Battle.net account.

Creating a Battle.net account is simple and free. To merge your existing account with a Battle.net account, visit https://eu.battle.net/.
For more info, check out the Battle.net site or read the FAQ.

Good idea to create a new email address that's more private, so it can't be guessed. Authenticator also helps.

Imho this is a very good change!
Sooner or later, every Blizzard game will be connected to the Battle.net 2.0 and - according to official post from Blizz - your guildmaster can see you online on Starcraft2, when you're late from the raid and can whisper you to move you a$$ to WoW.
Ofc this is one of the ways, how horde and alliance can communicate with each other now.

I see to it, that we don't have to check several websites to now, who and when killed this or that encounter/boss, 'cause Blizzard will provide progress trackers like they offered us the Armory and the achievements. *dreaming* Smiley

edit: AK47, you have to be very unlucky if all of your name combination is already in use. I merged my account some months ago, I was more lucky.
Let me help you, try: AK47_The_Almighty_Gnome_hackkk3r@hotmail.com ^^ I'm sure, this won't be in use Cheesy

I'm not a big fan of Blizzard's actions against gold spammers, nor am I a fan of the fact that ads on the official forums have been linked to keyloggers and other malicious software. Having to pay to stay protected is an absurd expense.

Oooh, people can see what you're doing even when you're not on WOW. Where do I sign up?

currently we expect battle.net to offer the cross-realm and cross-game chat options only after sharing secret IDs. So unless you tell your guild master what is your battle.net ID (that is not your email address), he wont be able to track you on battle.net

Ofc it's not mandatory to tell everyone who you are and what's your name is on Starcraft2 - Csülök explained this correctly.
I'm sure, there will be also an ignore list for this, so you can ignore your guildmaster, when he/she calls you to a raid while you're killing the Zerg Tongue
